Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters
Neurotransmitters are the body's chemical messengers. They are responsible for many physical and psychological functions in the body.
Researchers are becoming increasingly aware of connections between our Gut Health and our Mental Health and it is referred to as the "Gut-Brain Axis".
The Gut-Brain Axis can be defined as the biochemical signaling that takes place between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system.
Dopamine
One of the most talked about neurotransmitters is Dopamine. Dopamine is known as the “feel good” hormone. It’s responsible for feelings of happiness, motivation, alertness, and it helps with our working memory and focus.
Serotonin
One of the other highly discussed neurotransmitters is Serotonin. Serotonin is linked to mood and social behavior, digestion, sleep, and sexual desire to name a few. Low levels of serotonin have also been strongly correlated with depression.
Needless to say,
Neurotransmitters are extremely important to our overall health and well being.
It is estimated that 90% of the body’s Serotonin is made in the digestive tract. It is also known that different types of beneficial bacteria are able to produce Dopamine in the gut.
Both of these findings suggest a strong correlation between the health of our digestive system and our overall mental and physical health.
